State and County Leaders Celebrate the Completion of New Affordable Homes for Families on the former Fort Ord Military Base

November 22, 2013 — East Garrison, CA — On Friday, November 22nd, Anna Caballero, California State Secretary of Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency and the Monterey County Board of Supervisors will join other state and county leaders to celebrate the Grand Opening of Manzanita Place, an affordable rental community developed by MidPen Housing. Property tours begin at 11:00am and the ceremony begins at 11:30am at 17900 Kearny Street in East Garrison. Lunch will be served after the ceremony.

Manzanita Place provides 66 affordable homes for families and is the first development to be completed within the long-anticipated master-planned community of East Garrison.

“Collaborations like Manzanita Place demonstrate the good things that happen when government, non-profits and the private sector work together,” said Anna Caballero, Secretary of California’s Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency. “I look forward to the development of more great communities that create and preserve affordable housing in the Central Coast.”

“I’m excited to be part of the celebration honoring the completion of Manzanita Place,” said Monterey County Supervisor Jane Parker. “The County is woefully short of affordable rental units for our county’s hard working families, and Manzanita Place is hopefully just the beginning of adding more affordable housing options in Monterey County.”

“We’re excited to provide homes for hard working families close to where they work,” said Matthew O. Franklin, President of MidPen Housing. “These workers are vital to the region’s economic future and we’re proud to have provided them with housing that they can afford.”

Manzanita Place provides 11 one-bedroom, 27 two-bedroom, 22 three-bedroom and 6 four-bedroom apartments for individuals or families earning no more than 60% of Area Media Income which is $42,780 for a family of four. There are many amenities including a community center, computer lab, children’s playgrounds, and several open community areas and courtyards. In partnership with a network of service providers, MidPen Resident Services manages many onsite supportive services including financial literacy courses, wellness programs, computer training, vocational development, and a robust after school program for the youth. MidPen Property Management provides professional, onsite property management.

Manzanita Place is the affordable housing component of the master-planned, mixed-use development of East Garrison which will ultimately provide 1,400 new homes on 244 acres previously part of the former Fort Ord Army base. East Garrison — which is being developed by UCP, LLC — will also include a library, parks, an arts district with revitalized historic buildings, public safety stations, public transit and a mixed-use town center.

Financing for the $22.9M development was provided by the California Department of Housing and Community Development (Neighborhood Stabilization Program and HOME) and Wells Fargo Bank.
