Lives at Onizuka Crossing in Sunnyvale.
Having an affordable home means new opportunities for a single mom and her son.
Erika is hardworking single mom and a longtime Bay Area resident. Although she has worked as a Facilities Coordinator for Google for the past five years, Erika was shocked to discover how expensive and difficult it was to find a new place to live after her landlord sold the rental home she shared with her brother, sister, and eight-year-old son Christopher in East Palo Alto. Erika was forced to spend almost a year “couch surfing” as she couldn’t find an affordable place for her and her son to live.
Erika added her name to several wait lists in Mountain View and Sunnyvale – communities that were close to her work – but for several months she did not hear anything back. Then, she noticed a new community in Sunnyvale being built, and in a long shot, Erika again added her name to the list. When Erika got the call she Christopher had been accepted to live at Onizuka Crossing, she was shocked. Erika couldn’t believe she was one of the lucky ones.
Today, Erika and Christopher love living in their new home – Christopher even has his own room for the first time. Erika relishes the space she has, and appreciates how close she is to her work now. Most of all, Erika feels joy that she can continue to raise her son in a safe, permanent, affordable home.
Erika is hopeful about her future. “It’s a miracle we got to move into Onizuka Crossing,” she says. “But this is also affords new opportunities for me and my son – we are on our way up!”
