MidPen Housing Corporation, one of the nation’s leading non-profit affordable housing developers, owners, and managers, has appointed Tremayne Bess as Vice President of Human Resources. Since its foundation in 1970, MidPen has developed over 8,000 affordable homes for residents across 11 Northern California counties and employs a staff of nearly 450 people.
Mr. Bess will report to MidPen’s Chief Operating Officer and will oversee all aspects of Human Resources including talent acquisition, leadership development, employee relations, employee benefits, and strategic initiatives related to diversity and inclusion.
“MidPen strives to be our industry’s employer of choice and to create a culture where every employee feels valued, connected to our mission, and has opportunities to grow,” said Janine Lind, Chief Operating Officer for MidPen Housing. “From the first time I met Tremayne I could see that his passions, his values and his expertise aligned with this goal. He is the perfect person to lead this critical function and we’re elated to welcome him to the MidPen executive team!”
Mr. Bess has a personal connection to MidPen’s mission. Growing up at Liberty Square in Miami, the first public housing project for blacks in the southern United States, he saw firsthand the need for a better way to provide affordable housing.
“Growing up in public housing I’ve seen the long term impact that the lack of stability, opportunity and exposure can have on one’s life,” said Tremayne. “So I’m thrilled to join an organization whose mission is to provide those very things to the thousands of residents it serves. I’m honored for the opportunity to contribute by supporting MidPen employees and helping to further strengthen the organizational culture and values.”
Mr. Bess brings nearly 20 years of diverse HR experience across multiple industries including retail, healthcare, and technology. Most recently, he supported 900 employees in the engineering, data science, and international divisions at LinkedIn. Prior to LinkedIn, Mr. Bess served three different divisions at Gap, Inc., including the real estate team there. Before that, he held a lengthy tenure at Walmart leading an HR function that consisted of 29,500 employees across 11 markets.
Mr. Bess received a Master of Science in Public Administration/Management from Missouri State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Bethune-Cookman University.
