Tice Oaks, Walnut Creek

An active senior finds joy in giving back to her neighbors.

In her own words:

I’ve lived in this area all my life, and I’m 80 years old now, but I love to be active. I’m always gardening, decorating for the holidays, sending cards and notes to people. There are always things that need to be done!

For years, I worked at Home Depot, but had to leave my job for health reasons. I was living in a market-rate apartment at the time, and about a week before I had nowhere to go, MidPen called and said, “Can you come in right now?” I had to come back five times, but I got it all done. I was so happy, I said to my cat, “Honey, we got a home. We’re going home!”

Ever since then, it’s been a fairy tale. It’s magical. The staff are wonderful and they support everyone, they bring food, and they even helped me figure out how to manage my health care coverage.

I do enjoy lending a hand to my neighbors, helping with their hummingbird feeders and their gardening. I love volunteering to help keep the property looking good.

In front of my home, I have two signs that say it all: “Choose Love” and “Be Kind.” Tice Oaks is way more than just an apartment to live in… it’s a happy place.
