SANTA ROSA, CA, February 2, 2026—Partners from the city, county, and state came together to celebrate the grand opening of Mahonia Glen, MidPen Housing’s first affordable rental community in the city.
Mahonia Glen provides 99 affordable apartments for families with incomes between 30-60% AMI (currently $41,490-$82,980 for a family of four), including 43 homes reserved for residents who work in farming and agriculture.
Mahonia Glen was the first development in Santa Rosa to advance under SB 35—a bill that streamlines approval of projects that meet affordability requirements. Mahonia Glen moved forward in 2022 thanks to $55.4 million from the California Housing Accelerator, a state Housing and Community Development (HCD) program that fuels shovel-ready affordable housing.
“Mahonia Glen shows what’s possible when we align policies and resources to reduce logjams and create affordable homes more efficiently,” said Matthew O. Franklin, President and CEO of MidPen Housing. “We applaud our public- and private-sector partners for their commitment to much-needed affordable housing, and we’re thrilled to welcome 99 families into this new community.”
Located on Highway 12 on a 4.75-acre site that sat vacant for 10 years, Mahonia Glen offers an environmentally friendly design with one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments in eight garden-style buildings surrounding a community room, play structures, landscaped outdoor area, and a water feature that runs through the property. Nearby amenities include a shopping center with a grocery store and restaurants, parks and walking trails, public schools and a regional library, and, in front of the community, a new bus stop that operates several service lines.
“Mahonia Glen provides critically needed housing to families and farmworker households in our county, in close proximity to schools, parks, amenities, and services,” said Supervisor Rebecca Hermosillo, who represents Sonoma County’s First Supervisorial District. “I’m so excited to see this project cross the finish line, and I can’t wait for these 99 units to become homes for our friends and neighbors here in Santa Rosa.”
MidPen Property Management professionally manages Mahonia Glen, and MidPen Resident Services provide free, onsite services such as an after-school program, financial capabilities classes, employment preparation, and connections to community resources.
“We’re proud to support Mahonia Glen, a development that demonstrates how public and private collaboration can expand access to affordable housing for a broad spectrum of residents in Santa Rosa,” said James Vossoughi, Executive Director, J.P. Morgan Community Development Banking. “By reserving homes for agricultural families and creating a welcoming community for all, Mahonia Glen is helping build a foundation for long-term stability and opportunity.”
Financing for the development was provided through both public and private sources including the City of Santa Rosa; the California Department of Housing and Community Development’s California Housing Accelerator and Joe Serna, Jr. Farmworker Housing Grant programs; JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A.; and the Advanced Energy Build Program. The architect for Mahonia Glen is PYATOK Architecture + Urban Design and the general contractor is Deacon Construction, LLC.
