Sunnyvale, CA, October 14, 2026—City, County and State officials came together yesterday to celebrate the Grand Opening of Ira D. Hall Square in Sunnyvale.
A mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, Ira D Hall offers 176 affordable apartments, including 45 that are reserved for homeless individuals referred from the County of Santa Clara Coordinated Entry system. Apartments are available to residents earning up to 30% to 70% of AMI (approximately $43,170 to $100,730 per year for a one-person household).
“Through our strong partnership, MidPen has now created 12 affordable housing developments and over 1,000 affordable units here in Sunnyvale,” said Mayor Larry Klein. “The Ira D. Hall Square project is another outstanding example of that partnership in action. And it is a testament to how we can work together to achieve our community’s vision for more affordable housing.”
Located directly across from the Lawrence Caltrain Station, Ira D. Hall Square is the first development built under the City of Sunnyvale’s Lawrence Station Area Plan, a vision for a vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood centered around one of the region’s major transit hubs. The location provides residents with easy access to San Francisco and the Peninsula while helping reduce automobile dependence and ease traffic congestion in the broader community.
“When affordable homes are located close to public transportation, residents have greater access to jobs, education, health care, and essential services, improving economic mobility for working families, seniors, and young people starting out,” said Matthew O. Franklin, President and CEO of MidPen Housing. “We couldn’t think of a more fitting tribute to the life and legacy of our founding CEO Ira D. Hall, who was committed to making meaningful, lasting change for individuals and families with low incomes.”
MidPen Property Management professionally manages the community, and MidPen Resident Services provides residents with free, onsite services such as adult education, ESL courses, after school and summer programs, and case management for supportive housing residents. Amenities include a community room, outdoor play areas, on-site laundry, garden space, and after-school learning center.
“This project is the result of a successful partnership between local government, community-based organizations, and the private sector,” said KJ Kaminski, Director of the County Office of Supportive Housing. “A critical element of that partnership is the 75 project-based vouchers Ira D. Hall Square received from the Santa Clara County Housing Authority. These vouchers mean stability for individuals and families in our community, including 45 households who were experiencing homelessness before moving into their new apartment.” The County’s $11.2 million contribution toward the project, included $2 million from the $950 million Measure A Affordable Housing Bond, approved by voters in 2016.
“Bank of America is proud to provide construction and equity financing that helps bring this community to life while honoring the legacy of Ira D. Hall, one of MidPen Housing’s founders, whose commitment to expanding opportunity and strengthening communities continues to inspire the creation of affordable housing communities like this one. This development will provide service-enriched homes for hundreds of residents and support the ongoing revitalization of Sunnyvale’s Lawrence Station Area,” said Raquel González, Silicon Valley president, Bank of America.
Ira D. Hall Square was made possible through financial support from City of Sunnyvale, County of Santa Clara, Santa Clara County Housing Authority, California Housing Finance Agency, Bank of America. Destination: Home, California Tax Credit Allocation Committee and the California Debt Limit Allocation Committee. The architect is Studio T Square and the builder is Cahill Contractors.
