Matthew O. “Matt” Franklin is a nationally recognized leader in affordable housing, serving as the Chief Executive of MidPen Housing since 2008. Under his leadership, MidPen has become one of the country’s leading nonprofit housing organizations, amassing a portfolio of more than 9,000 affordable homes and assets totaling $2.9 billion.
Matt spearheads MidPen’s current strategic initiatives, centered on expanding housing production, providing new opportunities for residents, and advocating for more affordable housing resources and systems change. He takes pride in leading a talented team of nearly 600 mission-driven professionals.
With an extensive background in the private and public sectors, Matt previously served as Deputy Chief of Staff at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; Director of the California Department of Housing and Community Development; and Director of the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Housing. He frequently speaks at industry conferences and testifies in public forums on issues related to housing policy, finance, and innovation.
Currently, Matt serves as Board President of the NPH Action Fund and Director of the Housing Partnership Network. His past board roles include Chair of the Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California and positions on the boards of the National Housing Trust, the California Housing Finance Agency, and the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee.
Beyond his work in affordable housing, Matt enjoys spending time exploring the outdoors with his wife and two teenage sons.
