Learn & Earn: GED, HiSET, High School Diploma

Program Details

  • Obtain your GED, HiSET or High School Diploma in this individually customized and self-guided curriculum. 
  • Residents will first complete a placement exam which will indicate which prep-work and tests they need to take. 
  • Residents will receive a customized curriculum and will be responsible for completing weekly work on their own.
  • Residents must attend a weekly check-in (either in-person or virtually) with their instructor to discuss progress. These check-ins can also be used to address questions about content.
  • Residents will receive a stipend of $55 for each quarter credit (approximately 3-4 hours of work) they complete each week. 
  • The timeline to complete the GED program is dependent on both how much coursework needs to be completed as well as the resident’s pace of learning.
  • Fill out the GO Programs Interest Form if you’d like to be contacted once GED enrollment is available.

Who Is Eligible

  • Resident must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Resident must have their name on the lease.
  • Resident must be in good standing.

Who Is the Ideal Candidate

  • The best people for this program are those who want to complete their GED, HiSET or High School Diploma and have the discipline to drive their own pace of learning. 
  • Candidates should be comfortable connecting with instructors virtually or be able to commute to Menlo Park, San Jose or other locations once-a-week to meet with  instructors in person. Free Uber/Lyft rides for in-person meetings are available. Ask your MidPen site staff for more information.

Necessary Materials

  • A reliable internet connection (available at resident properties).
  • A Windows-based laptop or desktop computer running Windows 10 or later.* 
  • Headphones.**
*If you have a laptop computer you wish to use for the course, please confirm with MidPen site staff that it has all the qualifying components. **Computers and headphones can be borrowed at no cost from MidPen.

How to Apply

  • Fill out an online registration form.
  • MidPen site staff will assist in completing the registration materials.
  • The whole process will take about 20-30 minutes.
