The result of a visionary partnership between MidPen Housing and the City of Sunnyvale, Onizuka Crossing provides 58 low-income working families with new, affordable rental homes in the heart of the Silicon Valley. Onizuka Crossing began construction in late 2014 and welcomed residents in spring 2016. Twenty-nine units are reserved for formerly homeless individuals and their families, and those residents receive extensive supportive services in collaboration with the Santa Clara County Department of Behavioral Health and the VA Palo Alto Healthcare System HUD-VASH Program. Onizuka Crossing was named in honor of Ellison Onizuka, NASA astronaut and Lieutenant Colonel with the United States Air Force, and is a nod to the former Onizuka Air Force Station in Sunnyvale. Onizuka Crossing is a prime example of infill development, transforming a National Guard armory building into supportive, permanent affordable housing.
